The concept of inclusivity and equality have become increasingly popular topics of discussion in the workplace – with organizations across the world adopting initiatives to promote active inclusion and provide equal opportunities to employees from all backgrounds. While often used interchangeably, it’s important to understand the distinct differences between these two terms when considering how best to foster diversity within an organization. Inclusivity and equality are both important concepts for creating an equitable and just society.

  • Inclusivity refers to creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their identity, background, or experiences,  feels valued and respected
  • Equality, on the other hand, focuses on ensuring that everyone, regardless of their identity, background, or experiences, is treated fairly and given the same opportunities, resources, and access to information.

In short, inclusivity aims to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone, while equality aims to provide everyone with the same opportunities and resources to succeed. This means taking steps to implement equal employment opportunity policies, equal pay for similarly situated positions, anti-discrimination, and anti-harassment policies.

In contrast, inclusivity goes beyond the goal of fairness, and puts an emphasis on actively welcoming and celebrating people from differing backgrounds – something which can only be achieved through open dialogue and collaboration between members at all levels of an organization.

Additionally, an inclusive work culture should adopt measures such as flexible hours or remote work options which enable those who may face additional barriers due to life circumstances, (e.g., care obligations) access to certain positions or roles they may not otherwise be available.

Ultimately, both concepts are integral components of a truly diverse workplace – one where the diversity of voices are heard and celebrated and where no one feels the need to hide aspects of themselves or their background in order to fit in or progress their career. As such, organizations should strive towards achieving both equality and inclusivity to ensure their DEI initiatives are effective.
